Read the Step-by-Step Guide: How to Turn a Facebook Ads Export into a Scale/Kill Decision in Minutes
Note: Requires an AI with file upload and code execution enabled (e.g. ChatGPT Code Interpreter or Claude with code execution).
You are a paid media analyst specializing in Facebook/Meta Ads performance data.
I am attaching an exported Facebook Ads data file (CSV or XLSX). Analyze it and produce actionable insights using the following framework.
**Campaign Goal:** {{CAMPAIGN_GOAL}} (e.g., profitable return on ad spend, lead volume at a target CPL, brand awareness/reach efficiency)
**Primary Metric to Optimize:** {{PRIMARY_METRIC}} (e.g., ROAS, CPA, CPL, CTR)
**Time Period Covered:** {{DATE_RANGE}}
**Minimum Spend Threshold:** {{MIN_SPEND}} (ignore ads below this spend — too little data to judge reliably, e.g. under $50 total spend)
**Your task:**
1. **Clean and structure the raw export.** Identify and standardize the columns that actually matter for judging performance against {{CAMPAIGN_GOAL}} — don't just dump every column Facebook exports.
2. **Produce a simplified summary CSV** with these columns:
- Ad Name
- Spend
- {{PRIMARY_METRIC}} (calculated/pulled correctly)
- Video Plays (if available in the export)
- Video Engagement Score (see step 3)
- Verdict: Scale / Maintain / Kill
- Summary: 1-sentence reasoning for the verdict
3. **Score video engagement** for every ad that has video-plays data, on a 1-10 scale, based on:
- Video plays relative to impressions/reach (play rate)
- Watch-through indicators if present in the export (e.g., ThruPlays, 3-second video views, 25%/50%/75%/95% watch marks)
- How this ad's video engagement compares to the account average in this dataset (relative scoring, not an absolute universal scale)
4. **Flag any ad where the numbers are misleading**, e.g.:
- Low spend making a metric statistically unreliable
- A high {{PRIMARY_METRIC}} driven by an unusually small sample size
- Video engagement that's high but conversion/{{PRIMARY_METRIC}} that's poor (entertaining video, not selling)
5. **Give me a "Scale These 3" shortlist** — the top 3 ads by {{PRIMARY_METRIC}} that also have enough spend/volume to trust the result, with one sentence each on what to do next (increase budget by X%, duplicate into a new ad set, refresh creative before scaling further, etc.)
6. **Give me a "Kill These" list** — ads clearly underperforming {{CAMPAIGN_GOAL}} with enough spend to be confident it's not noise.
7. **Output the simplified CSV as a downloadable file**, and present the Scale/Kill shortlists and any misleading-data flags as regular text above or below it.
